end of the year reflection

Since the beginning of the year, I have seen the importance of technology in the classroom. By learning about smart boards, active boards, web sites, and blog sites I have just seen a glimpse of the technology that is out there. After observing a few classes I am seeing just how important it is to use technology in the classroom. Technology helps keep students more interested and on task when teaching. Using the smart board allows students to interact with the material which is a great thing. I have worked on being more creative in my lesson plans. For my Reading Methods class I dressed up as Amelia Bedelia as I began to teach the class. This was a stretch for me because I am not accustom to doing this. I however got into character and had a lot of fun with the lesson. I hope to do more things like this. Along with dressing up I used the smart board to display my lesson plan and teach it to the class. I am going to continue to incorporate technology into my lesson plans and be as creative as I can with how I teach my lessons to a class.

I just got back from benaroya hall. I noticed that at the beginning of the show there was a projection of snowflakes on the walls. When the symphony started to play the projection was turned off and it changed to pinkish colored lights. I began to wonder how this happens. There had to be projectors on the wall somewhere, but I could not see them. I am curious how they do this. I would love to look in to this more.

I found out that you can import a power point presentation onto the smart board software. This is very helpful! I found that it is a lot easier to create a presentation in power point and then import the presentation. You can simply put a cover on the top of the slide so not all of it shows at once. I ended using power point for a majority of my presentation. This is because I am more familiar with the power point software. I used a few smart board slides and then used a few smart board slides.

Reflection 3

This week I worked on creating a smart board presentation. It was a little difficult to do. I would have thought that it would have been an easier process. It took forever to group items, find pictures online, and change the background. I did not think that the process would have been so complicated. I don't think I will create a lot of smart board presentations while I am a teacher. It takes forever, and I didn't think it was any better than using power point.

Reflection 2

In class last week we looked at a few different web sites. We explored a site called kidspiration and then looked at a free online grading tool. I really liked the kidspiration site. It had a lot of different lesson plan ideas as well as ways for kids to interact with material taught to them. The grading tool was helpful as well. It gave us an idea of how other grading tools work. I got to see how to list items, how to come up with a grading scale, and how to post grades. This was a great experience.

Reflection 1

I visited Costco today with my mom. There I found huge flat screen TV's. My sisters and I commented on how amazing these were. My mom went on to talk about how they were not like normal tv's. She said that they have a projector in the back of them that allows the image to be displayed. They are not like the other TV's which have different pixils in them and display different colors. I would love to look into how these TV's are created and how they differ in image quality. I found this to be an interesting fact.

Thoughts about the project:

This project was very time consuming. I did not think it would take so long to create the project. I did have a little fun though. I figured out how to use the different features of the smart board software. I also figured out how to use another blog web site. Probably the most frustrating thing was trying to post my slides onto my blog. I tried both on blogger and wordpress.com. I was able to post the slides but they were all jumbled and did not appear in the order in which I posted them. Wordpress.com was a little better. They provided a link to each slide. This was annoying though, because I have 11 slides total. I did not think that people would want to go through and click on 11 links to view the different slides. I used freecorder to record a couple podcasts describing how I did my project and linked them to my wordpress.com blog site. This project was a great experience. Though stressful and time consuming, I learned how to create lessons using the smart board software. By creating a lesson plan I also learned how to use the different features of the smart board. I also learned how to create a new blog web site. I will hopefully be able to use this smart board presentation in the classroom at some point.

NETS for Teachers:

The completion of this project modeled many different NETS for teachers. 1a. I engaged students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources. I created a lesson plan using the smart board software. This lesson plan helps students know how to find the perimeter and area of squares and rectangles. This is a real world problem a lot of students do not know how to go about this. I taught them a skill they can use in their everyday life. The technology used was the smart board software. 3a, 3c: I demonstrated that I was somewhat fluent in using the smart board software. I also became somewhat fluent in the use of the wordpress.com blogger site. I also was able to communicate to information effectively using these two different technologies. 4c: I provided a lesson that catered to both visual and auditory learners. If I presented this lesson plan I could also cater to kinesthetic learners by modeling what I meant using a tangible object.

NETS for students:

The completion of this project modeled many different NETS for students as well. 1a,b: I used the smart board software to create an original lesson plan. This is my original lesson plan and it is an expression of my learning as a student. 2a,b: I created a lesson plan using the smart board software. I used a new blog site to post my ideas. I also used a pod cast to explain how I went about completing the project. This interacts with a number of different audiences. My peers and teachers can read my blog and listen to my pod cast. 3c: I first created a lesson plan using the smart board software. Secondly I had to figure out what blog site I wanted to use and how I would go about posting my ideas. I used a podcast to explain my ideas and how I went about completing my project. 4c: for this project I had to use a lot of critical thinking. I had to figure out a way to post my ideas onto my blog site. Since I couldn't post my slides directly to the site I had to come up with an alternative way to post my ideas. I ended up using free recorder to create a pod cast. 6a,c: I gained an understanding of how to use the smart board software as well as how to use a new blog web site. while completing this project I had to do a lot of trouble shooting. Some things did not work at first. I had to try and try again to get things the way I wanted them to look.

In class assignment

Today we looked at many different resources for teachers. I especially liked the tool kidspiration. I loved how you could use different pictures to illustrate your thoughts. This would be great to use in the classroom. In math class a student could make up number sentences and then illustrate them. For example 1/2+1/2=1, .50+.50=$1.00. Also this site had a lot of other resources. They had different projects that the kids could do. Different templates for each subject, that have the kids work on different activity pages. I would definitely use this tool in my classroom. I also liked the grade book software. I think this free software is helpful. It is fairly easy to add assignments, grades, and students. The only problem with this site is that it sets a limit on how many students you can add to your class. I wouldn't use this in my class, however, it is nice to practice on.

class 11/17/09

I missed class on November seventeenth so to make up the class I watched the videos posted online and talked to one of my class mates (in person) about what she learned. Jenny talked about how she learned about the importance of networking with people. It is important to make connections and get your name out there. I watched the different videos online and I learned a few other things. One of the ladies talked about how to improve lesson plans. She talked about how she never writes out the lesson plans showing the GLEs and EALRs. Since she already has a curriculum to teach off of she works on improving the lesson for certain students. Say she had four ELL students she would focus on improving the lesson for them so that they would understand what she was teaching better. Another thing that was emphasized is that we need to get our name out there. We should use our connections and not be afraid to try new things. When we first start teaching sometimes we will not get a job right away. Substitute jobs are sometimes all we will get. We should work to get our name out there and let teachers know that we are available and willing to sub. for them. Sending emails as follow ups are key. This way the teacher knows how the day went and knows you want to come back. A lot of times teachers will talk and you may get referrals for sub./full time jobs from the connections you have. Persistence pays off.

Features of Word, Powerpoint and Excel

I use word to type up documents, edit text, and finalize papers. I sometimes insert pictures and I use word art as well. I use power point to create PowerPoint presentations using both pictures and text. I used excel to figure out different formulas for my statistics class.

To teach children PowerPoint and word, I would have them type up a paper on word changing the font doing a different font in each paragraph. I would also have them insert a chart demonstrating their data in their paper. They would also be challenged to insert a fun shape. They would use word art for their title. I would also have children create a PowerPoint presentation, using transitions, sounds, and inserting clip art or a picture. I would teach them to use these features and they would get to show they understand how to use them in these projects. For the last and final project I would teach the kids how to use some basic features in excel. They would show their understanding by creating a graph of their spending each month. If they do not get an allowance they can create a pretend spending chart. They would label each category of spending. For example food, candy, clothes, toys. They would then calculate the percent of money spent in each category. I would make sure to go over how to do this with them. This project would have to be for older children, because the formulas in excel can get quite complicated.

resources for educators

I chose to visit the adventures in educational blogging site. Here I found many different blogs talking about different issues teachers may face. One of the first blogs talked about technology education for teachers. It talked about how many teachers are not educated in different forms of technology. It talked about how many school districts provide educational classes after school, however, not many attend them. This is because they do not have time. One district talks about how they made Monday afternoons devoted to teacher learning and meetings. This month they devoted this time to technology classes. Though these classes were optional many teachers attended them and there was a big turn out.

I want to make sure that I am educated in the different types of technology. I will try my best to attend as many technology classes as I can so that I can be better educated. This way I can incorporate technology easily into my lesson plans.

Another blog talked about organization. There is an application called life balance which allows you to easily organize your tasks and emails. He said he used the application on his ipod touch however it was not compatible on his computer. He found a solution. He found that by linking his ipod to his computer he could access the application online. This way he could add tasks from online or from his ipod touch. He talks about how he really liked the sub-tasks and places feature. With the sub-tasks feature he could easily set up to do lists as well as track the progress of his projects. The places feature helped him to remember to get the dry cleaning or go to the store.

I would look into using this application as a teacher. Being organized is so important. It is so easy to loose track of tasks and projects. This application seems to make things a little bit easier.

online learning experience

I listened to a pod cast on interactive white boards and their use in the school setting.I learned a lot from listening to this talk. They talked about teacher interaction verses student interaction with the white boards. They talked about how teachers primarily use the white board for instruction. Their focus was that students need to be challenged to interact more with the white boards. This way they are applying what they have learned. One teacher talked about how she allows her students to use the white board soft ware to create presentations and videos. Another teacher talked about how her drama students would use the white board to display different backgrounds for their plays. They would edit the images on the computer and then display them on the board. Another teacher talked about how she liked the record feature on the smart board. She liked how she could record everything that was written on the board. This was very helpful when showing a student how to do a math problem. They could write out the problem step by step and then if needed re play the steps until the student grasped how to do the problem. I found this all to be very interesting.

I would apply this in the class room setting by challenging myself to allow my students to interact with the white boards. I should focus on instructing them. However, I should also allow for a time when they interact with the boards, show what they have learned. I could do this by allowing them to create their own power point presentations. Also I could do this by allowing them to participate in a game or something that allows them to apply the skills they have learned.

Project 4

Here is the basic plan for my technology project. I hope you enjoy listening to it. I plan on creating a mini lesson using the smart board notebook soft ware. This will be a power point slide show which will utilize all the features of the smart board. I will then post my completed lesson on a blog site. I worked with Jenny Burch for this project. We decided to use Google for our search engine because it is well known and reliable. Our tool box contains different links that we thought would be helpful for educators. There is not really any organizational part, the links were just placed in the search engine. Some of the sites I used were:

• Teachertube.com: This site is a lot like YouTube, however it is geared for teachers. The videos are pre-screened so that they are appropriate for students. These videos help to explain concepts to students and some are just for fun. I would use this site in my classroom, to help students better understand difficult concepts. Sometimes a video can do the trick.
• www.k12.wa.us: This site is very helpful it contains the grade level standards for K-12Th grade. This site is very helpful because it helps teachers pin point what their students need to learn for their given grade level. I use this site a lot to make sure my lesson plans are up to par. I'm sure I will use it even more when I'm a teacher. It is nice to be able to make sure you are accomplishing the right learning targets.
• www.fossweb.com: This site is great because it contains different games and activities for students of different ages. This site is very user friendly and I love the different games it has. I would use this site to help promote learning of a certain subject. I would use the games along with a lesson to make it more fun and interactive for students.

week 10

This blog was very interesting. I liked the story about the doctor and the i phone. My dad is a doctor and he sometimes will draw pictures for patients to better explain a concept. A video, however, is even better. This way patients would be able to better understand what is going on. I also found the part about the flip camera to be helpful. who would have thought that there are so many different uses for a camera in the classroom. I love the ideas. It would be fun to send DVDs showing kids progress during the week instead of paper news letters!!

the active board week 9

In class we met at Alexander Graham Bell Elementary School to go over how to use the active board. This teacher was extremely helpful and allowed us to sit in on her classroom. I learned that the smart board is different from the active board. The active board only has one pen that is used for writing and moving objects around. This teacher helped us by giving us an introduction on how to use the active board clickers. I liked the different features the active board has. The active board seemed to be very similar to the smart board. It was helpful that the teacher gave us a brief introduction on how to use the smart board clickers. She gave examples of flip chart quizzes she had put together. This was helpful. I felt like I learned a lot of new techniques. For example she showed us how to add sound to a slide or flip chart. She also talked about the importance of technology in the classroom.

Tonight we had a man from the smart board company come to talk to our class. He showed us a demonstration of how different aspects of the smart board work. I never knew you could do so much with a smart board. We have gone over several things in class, but a lot of this was new to me. I really liked how he was able to highlight different parts of text on the screen. I never knew this was so simple to to. He explained how he made the text to be a white color. He then made a colored box. He was able to then move the box over the white text to reveal what it said. Another thing I thought was really cool was how he "recycled objects" He simply created a white text box with a trash can locked onto it. He then dragged the "trash" to the recycle bin. The unwanted text or objects are simply hid behind the white text box. It however gives the illusion that they have been deleted. I found this fascinating.

The other day I was thinking about how much our world has changed in the past few years. I was thinking about how technology has improved so much. It's crazy if you think about it. I remember as a child listening to tapes on my Walkman. Now everyone has I-pods, tape players are a thing of the past. I also remember as a child having one family computer. This computer was quite large and took up almost the whole desk. Now everyone in my family has their own lap top. Most of my friends have their own computer as well. I remember in grade school helping the teacher wipe down the white board/chalk board after class. I then remember the phase of overhead projectors. At the end of high school I remember our school installed smart boards in the class rooms. We also were able to use document cameras. though overhead projectors and white boards are still sometimes used smart boards seem to be the preferred technology. I also remember as a child carrying around floppy discs. We used them all the time to save our work on. I remember one time my friend took his floppy disc apart and I was amazed that there was really not much inside the plastic covering. Now a days zip drives are the new thing. I have an external hard drive, which I back up my computer on. I also have a flash drive/or zip drive which I save my every day work onto. Flash drives are a lot more practical, because they are more reliable and do not break as easily. I remember how frustrating it was to save your work to a floppy disc soon to find out your disc was defective. I remember as a child having a home phone which I used for most my communication. Over the past few years cell phone's have become all the rage. I remember I was at the park with the kids i babysit. I recall this seven year old girl saying, "I'm so excited I get an I-phone for my birthday!" I was shocked I don't even have an I-phone and I'm 21! I am really surprised that a girl that young would be given a cell phone. This is the new thing though. I have noticed that more and more young children have cell phones. As I mentioned earlier in my blog, dial up Internet is a thing of the past. Most people use wireless Internet today. It is faster and more efficient. The list goes on....As I said earlier, I am amazed how much technology has changed over the years.

Reflection 3

We went to music class on Monday and I was introduced to yet another form of technology. Our teacher showed us the new microphone system that was installed in their classroom. This system allows the teacher to use a mini microphone when speaking to the class. The microphone system also included a microphone necklace. This way if the teacher wants to use a hands free microphone, they can do so. My teacher talked about how the microphone is helpful, especially during story reading time. With the older children, she allows them to pass the mic. around as they take turns reading. This makes it easier to hear the students. Some students at this age are still not great at projecting their voices.

Reflection 2

I was watching You've Got Mail with one of my friends. As Meg Ryan turned on her computer I recognized the dial up tone. I then heard the familiar "You've got mail" voice. I have not heard that in such a long time! I never realized how much things have changed in the past years. Wireless internet is the new thing. Very few people still use the old dial up method to get online. In our minds, faster is better. I thought this was funny to go back to the ninety's and hear the good old dial up tone again.

NETS Standard for Teachers

I am working on facilitating student learning and creativity. We are only limited by our own imagination, and therefore should try to be creative; and make learning fun for children. I have been able to apply this concept in a couple ways. I try to come up with different ways to teach a topic so that it caters to each learning style and is able to be learned by all students. I have tried to use different activities in my lesson plans so that I can accomplish this goal. The other way I have accomplished this NETS Standard is by incorporating technology into my lesson plans. I have been looking at a bunch of different activities that can be used for a smart board. I think it is amazing how much one can accomplish by using the smart board. I have not been able to apply these games to my lessons, but hopefully I can, once the smart boards are installed in our classrooms.

Reflection 1

A few weeks ago our music class had the opportunity to meet at Lake view Elementary for our class. While there I was introduced to many different forms of technology. I noticed that in the classroom there was an active board along with two computers and a document camera. I was shocked that a k-3 grade class would have access to this much technology. I don't think I even had computers in my classroom when I was this age. I had never used an active board before. I know how the smart board works, but this was a little different. I noticed how there is just one pen that is used. This pen acts as the writing utensil and can control the different settings of the board by clicking on the proper settings. Our teacher allowed us to come up to the board and solve different problems. It was sometimes difficult because the settings are different on the active board. I am catching on though.

Assignment 2

This activity would be great to use for fifth and sixth graders. This activity involves

measuring trees. With this application the students would be able to use the given ruler to measure the trees. They could also zoom in on the tree and measure the diameter and circumference. There is a work sheet at the bottom of the gizmo that could be used for class work. If the teacher wanted to they could correct the activity in class. By using the smart board pen they could go through and mark which answers they as a class got right and wrong.

NETS for students 1: Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. Students through this activity will be able to apply their existing knowledge about science to answer the problems given to them. This activity would help them use their knowledge about how to measure objects. They would be able to apply this knowledge in this activity.

NETS for teachers 1: Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS•S. Teachers incorporate digital tools to help students to learn. This fun game allows students to learn while using the smart board. At the end of this gizmo there is a worksheet that can be used in assessing the students. Teachers could use this as a class activity or assign it for homework.

The smart board would improve learning in the classroom by helping the students to be more on-task. By using the smart board it encourages students to interact and play with the technology in front of them. When playing they are also learning. I think students would be more willing to participate if it were doing a fun game on the smart board. No one likes boring worksheets.

experience with html

I did not like working with html. I found the process quite tedious, however interesting. I hope that I can learn more about how to do html formatting from practice. I did not like doing all the formatting by hand. I, however did find the web sites helpful. I think I will use these web sites in the future when I am a teacher. I created a basic web site. K-8 web site review

I looked at Life Christian School and Academy. I attended there from k-4Th grade. The web site is very user friendly. There are tabs at the top of the page linking you to different parts of the web site. There are also links to the left side of the page. As well as this there is a calendar listing important events. This is located on the left side of the home page. Along with this there are pictures of different events that go on at the school. I couldn't think of anything that was missing. beginning of class reflection

I never thought about how important technology is in education.Technology is seen to be a very important part of education. It helps keep the students focused and engaged. As well as educating them about how technology works. Technology should have a major in the K-12Th grade classroom. Technology should be used to help enhance the learning experience. Teachers should utilize their resources and incorporate the technology provided. It is seen that students respond better to lectures when technology is used. Therefore, technology should be readily used.

Generation IM

This article talks about the importance of incorporating technology into education. The article emphasizes how children use technology in their daily lives and that it is important to try to integrate it into their education . I loved the example of the kid in the beginning of the article. The discription of him made me laugh, because this is so true. This is definately becoming the norm in families. I also really liked the different suggestions on how to integrate technology into the class room setting. We as a class are already implementing a blog. I thought it was interesting how they suggested the kids make and edit videos to explain a concept or do a report. With today's technology it would be easy to edit a film clip. I found this article to be very helpful and it gave me some great ideas that I could use when I start my student teaching.

Assignment 1

• Summary: I read the article titled, Learning to Teach with Technology. This article talked about the importance of technology in the teaching of science. The article talked about how explaining difficult science concepts is made easier when experiments can be video taped. This way the video can be broken up into smaller parts and each concept can be explained individually. By integrating technology into the curriculum it makes it easier for students to remember and retain information. This integration also makes it easier for them, because they become more familiar with how technology is used. The use of the geometric sketch pad is a great way to do just this. This pad uses computer software to help students build and examine models, figures, shapes, and graphs. Another technology is a hand held device that can measure water quality. From this students can download the data onto a computer spread sheet. This way students can visualize the data and interpret what it all means. Another way that technology is being integrated is seen at the University of Virginia Curry School of Education. This school uses a program called starry nights to allow students to look at different star configurations. They are able to look at the star configurations back to up to 1,000 years ago. This would not be possible without technology. The article goes on to talk about that it is difficult to find the funding to educate teachers about this new technology.

• Reflection: I thought it was very interesting seeing all the different ways technology can be integrated into science. I never knew there were so many ways. I also think it is sad that so many schools lack the funding to educate their teachers better on technology integration. This article makes me appreciate our class, Technology in Education, even more.

• Importance: This is important to me because it helps teachers to integrate technology into their teaching and do so creatively. We as teachers want to be up to date on all the methods of teaching, so this would greatly help us. Our world is becoming more and more dependant on technology and it is our job as teachers to help our students become familiar with current technologies. For example in our class we are using a class blog to communicate with others. This is helpful. I never knew how to use a blog site before this. Another way we as teachers can integrate technology is by using the smart board or online games. Online learning games help students be able to use technology, have fun, and learn the required material.

• plan of action: As a teacher I will work on being creative in how I integrate technology into my lesson plans. I will look at each subject or concept I have to teach and ask the question how could I integrate technology into this discussion or lesson? I plan to implement this into my lesson plans for my different subject classes.

• NETS For Students: Communication and Innovation

• Importance: This will help students learn how to use digital media to communicate to other class members or the teacher. In some circumstances this skill would allow them to also communicate with children across the cultures. This would help the students themselves learn as well as contribute to the learning of others. Students would learn how to use different technologies and apply their knowledge.

• Incorporation: Two ways that we as teachers could incorporate this into our curriculum is through teacher tube, and by being a pen pall with another country. Teacher tube is kid safe and is a great way to let children view online videos that teach them about important concepts. Certain videos could be used depending on the subject being taught. Another way is by allowing the class to be pen palls with a class from another country. This would allow students to use email. This would also allow students to learn more about a different culture and their way of life. This pen pal idea could be used in History when the students are learning about a different country. For example when the students learn about Brazil they could possibly email a class from Brazil and see how their lives and customs are different from ours.

Interactive White Boards:

This article talks about how students worked to use the smart board to create a math lesson for an elementary school class. They had students come in and see the star wars beginning part playing on the screen. This was to get the students attention. They then went over the properties of 2D shapes. They used the spotlight tool to focus on different objects and have the students recall what shape it was. This helped the children review their shapes in a fun way. The children were then asked to make a 2D alien our of card shapes and place them on their pretend planet, a piece of card board. Then each group was a given rule that they had to follow. For example one could be, "it is illegal to use any shapes other than those which have angles that add up to 180°'. After the students created their planet and aliens they then could build it on the smart board. This was a great way to get children thinking about shapes. Turning on the Lights:

There were a lot of issues talked about in the article that I was not aware of. This article talks about how education used to be where students were introduced to technology. Today, however this is not so true. Most forms of technology are banned in the school setting. It talked about how students said that they were bored in the classroom 99% of the time. This horrible! I think there should be a way that teachers can integrate technology into their lesson plans. Instead of having to write papers for assignments, students should have the option to use a powerpoint presentation, or web page. Students should be able to use their computers in class, however there should be some restrictions. They should only be able to use them for note taking or class use. Like it talked about in the article, they should have to sign some form saying they agree to the class rules. If they disobey they should have their computer privlages restricted. I also think teachers should look into creating class web pages or blog sites to make things more interesting for the kids. Another thing that could be good is the use of online games to teach. These would help to incorporate technology into education.

My story

I decided i wanted to become a teacher a few years ago. I had just decided that being a nurse was not for me and was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. As I was praying about this I felt that God was leading me to become a teacher. I would love to help kids by teaching them the necessary skills to be successful in society today. I would like to teach K-3 grade but would also be interested in teaching middle school science.
